How Sikkens became PPG ProLuxe
- 2013AkzoNobel sells its North American architectural coatings business — including the Sikkens exterior wood finishes — to PPG.
- 2015PPG adds the “ProLuxe” name: cans read “Sikkens ProLuxe.”
- 2017The line is renamed “PPG ProLuxe” — same products and formulas, new name and packaging.
- 2019+The Sikkens name comes off the label. Today’s cans say PPG ProLuxe, with a “Same Sikkens formula — new name” badge.
That is why people still search for “Sikkens stain” even though the name is gone from the label. The products are the same ones contractors and log home owners have trusted for years.

What stayed the same
- The formulas — PPG says the ProLuxe line contains all of the same Sikkens products and formulas.
- The color numbers — 078 Natural, 077 Cedar, 009 Dark Oak and the rest.
- The systems — Cetol 1 RE is still the base coat for Cetol 23 Plus RE, and Log & Siding is still a two-coat finish.
Questions about the name change
What is Sikkens stain called now?
Sikkens exterior wood stain is now sold as PPG ProLuxe. For example, Sikkens Cetol SRD is now PPG ProLuxe SRD Wood Finish, and Sikkens Cetol Log & Siding is now PPG ProLuxe Log & Siding Wood Finish.
Is PPG ProLuxe the same as Sikkens?
Yes. When PPG renamed the line in 2017 it said the PPG ProLuxe line would contain all of the same Sikkens ProLuxe products and formulas, with a new name and packaging. Current cans carry a “Same Sikkens formula — new name” badge.
Why can’t I find Sikkens Cetol at my paint store?
The Sikkens name was taken off the label, so stores list it as PPG ProLuxe — and box stores carry the RE version, which is not the same as the original SRD. We stock the full line, including the original 550 VOC SRD.
Do you ship Sikkens to Canada?
We do not ship to Canada. For easy pickup from Essex County, Canada, we are located 20 minutes from the bridge in Michigan.
